Santiago Calatrava: finding architecture's soul

The renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has been speaking to euronews. His designs - which take their inspiration from nature - provoke strong reactions; they are either loved or loathed. Calatrava, who considers himself to be above all an artist, says an architect is also a philanthropist. In the past cities were designed to last, today they provide an insight into the soul of the lost civilisations that built them. So, if architecture is the most tangible sign of a civilisation how then to preserve the sacred nature of a location?

  12. @gdbalck True... but that does not change the fact that both share common principles. I did not say that art is based on leftist political ideas, but both have common principles c.f. main art movements. Yet again art or artists should not be discriminated -or judged- by their views either leftist or rightist. Note both 'sides' have something to give.

  14. @christosxe Opinions are just that, not facts my friend. Lest we forget the millennia of art conceived prior to the modern leftist ideologies.

  16. @gdbalck any form of pure art (without the influence of the capital) lies on the same principles as 'left wing' political ideas. This is a fact, note though that there are exceptions....

  23. I LOVE THIS VIDEO. WITH THE SITUATION OF THE ECOLOGY, I THINK SUSTAINABILITY SHOULD BE THE 4TH PILLAR OF ARCHITECTURE THAT ARCHITECTS SHOULD CONSIDER. I SAW ONE OF CALATRAVA'S WORK HERE IN TORONTO, AND IT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO.
